In 1924, General George Smedley Butler visited Bonney Lake while on a military mission to survey routes through central Washington for U.S. Army Corps of Engineers projects such as the Lewis and Clark Expedition Route 66 highway project east of Wenatchee and construction of an increase in water levels along the Snake River below Wenatchee Dam which would create flooding conditions near Seattle each wintertime when ice covers most of that river bed). Bonney Lake is a census-designated place in Kitsap County, Washington, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle metropolitan area. The community is named after General George Bonney and his family who settled there in 1875. The town was founded on October 8, 1876, by pioneers James W. Hixon and Richard Ivey with the intent of building a trading post between Seattle and Tacoma. The post office was founded on December 3, 1876, and remained open until it closed on July 16, 1907. In 1886 Duane Noyes built a cabin near the current intersection of First Street and Meridian Avenue to serve as a summer home for himself and his wife Lillie Noyes. This house still stands today overlooking Bonney Lake from Court Road across from the old Methodist Church (now known as CenturyLink Field). In 1889 Major Isaac Fenton opened up land southeast of town along First Street for farming purposes which he donated to the town government in order to support growth within its limits. On October 8th1876 general George Bonney arrived at Fort Snelling Depot with his family looking for land west ofSeattle to purchase for their new homestead called "Bonney Lake". He had first heard about this area through various traders while visiting Puget Sound during his army service in California in 1861-1865 Some time later he returned east overland via Oregon Pass arriving at what is now Seattle on November 17th 1865 where he met Capt Samuel Cowlitz who introduced him to John Buchdahl who offered him 640 acres of land just outsideof downtownSeattle including Bonney Lakesouthwest corner . After hearing more about this propertyGeneral George Bonomy decided that it would make sense to build a Trading Post here located betweenSeattle & Tacoma so he purchased 4 lots totaling 180 acres from Capt Buchdahl.. construction began soon after but due to bad weather conditions ( intense snowmelt)the post office moved back & forth between Eastsound & Olympia several times before finally being established at what is now BonneyLake effective May 5th 1887 under the name " Fort Snelling Post"

The first permanent settler in Bonney Lake was John Belknap who came to the area in 1879. He founded what became known as the Belknap Hotel and Trading Post. The post office moved to Bonney Lake from Yakima in 1902. In 1909, the community changed its name to Bonney Lake after Rear Admiral John Worthy Bonney whose ship "USS Bonny" served with distinction during World War I and II. In 1959, a local group of businessmen created the first successful agricultural commune in Western Washington when they introduced a system of crop rotation called "Green Revolution." This led to increased production and brought new people into the community who helped improveBonney Lake's economy through their purchasing power and business values which continue to this day
