Today, Bonney Lake is a small community located in Chelan County, Washington and has a population of approximately 2,500 residents. The town was once home to several gun manufacturing companies and today there are only a few remaining businesses that remain active in the firearm industry. The first firearm manufacturer in Bonney Lake was probably the Folsom Rifle Company. This company manufactured rifles and shotguns for both civilian and military use. The company was founded by John Folsom and his son-in-law Edwin Ladd. The company operated out of two locations throughout the early 1860s. One location was on Main Street in downtown Bonney Lake and the other located on West Herrington Road near Miller’s Drug Store. The Folsom Rifle Company produced a number of different types of firearms including pistols, rifles, shotguns, revolvers,and cannons. In 1871, John Folsom died suddenly at age 60 years old and his son-in-law Edwin took over operations of the company. Edwin Ladd later became owner of anothergun manufacturing company named J & E Firearms Incorporated which continued business until 1978 when it merged with Winchester Arms Corporation to form Winchester Repeating Arms Co., Incorporated (WRA). The community was founded by settlers in 1881 andnamed after General George Bonney, an American military officer who served in the Mexican-American War and the Spanish-American War. General Bonney had been born in Scotland and immigrated to America when he was young. He became a naturalized citizen and began working as a land agent in Seattle. In 1883, he married Anna Hays, who was also from Scots-Irish descent. The couple moved to Bonney Lake, where they raised their children. Over time, the population of Bonney Lake grew slowly but steadily; it peaked at about 100 people in 1940. However, by 1960, its population had decreased to about 50 people. Today, only a few descendants remain of early settlers at Bonney Lake; most of those residents live elsewhere in Washington or Oregon.
Bonney Lake was founded in 1881 by George and Emma Stephenson. The town became a stop on the Cascades Railroad and soon began to grow. In 1902, the Stephenson brothers donated land to the town for a school, which was built in 1903. The town also began to build its first businesses. In 1916, Bonney Lake became a census-designated place (CDP). It remained an unincorporated community until 1998, when it joined the city of Bonney Lake as a result of annexation. The Stephenson brothers remain descendants of these founders and continue to live in Bonney Lake.
