A small, local armory was established in 1806 and soon became known as the “Armory of the Pacific Northwest.” By 1827, ammunition had become a common item for Various militias throughout the Northwest. Ammunition production continued until 1861 when the American Civil War began and production stopped due to lack of demand. In 1865, ammunition production resumed at the armory and lasted until 1902 when it was discontinued due to World War I. The Armory continued to operate into 1922 when it closed its doors for good. Today, there is only a faint reminder of what this once large and popular industry used to do in Bonney Lake. However, history does not end here! In 1895, the Bonney Lake Gunnery School was opened in Bonney Lake. In 1907, the school became the Northwest Coast Ammunition Company and continued to operate until it merged with Winchester Repeating Arms in 1918. The company manufactured ammunition for both American and World War 1 military rifles and pistols.

In 1892, George Armstrong introduced his “Bullet” design which became known as the Armstrong Rifle Bullet due to its effectiveness in Combat rifle shooting. This bullet had a small tungsten core surrounded by a hardcover jacket made of steel or brass that protected the tungsten from being damaged during firing sessions
