Grant visited Bellingham while campaigning for president and chose it as his final destination for vacation before leaving for Washington D.C.. In 1855, when Congress created King County, it included all of present-day King County except portions of Pacific Northwest that had already been annexed by Seattle in 1889–1890 under then-governor George Condon’s effort to solidifyaudited annexation boundaries. This left much of central and southern Kings County unincorporated but within the newly created county limits nonetheless – including parts of today's downtown Bellevue and Everett neighborhoods which are today part of Redmond or Bothell
