Bellingham, Washington is a city in Puget Sound, Washington. It is the county seat of King County and the largest city in the state. The population was 1,029 at the 2010 census. The name "Bellingham" was given to the area by Captain John Bell in 1834 after his explorations through what is now King County. At first it was written as "Bellevue", but on account of its distance from Seattle it was decided to change it to terminals for postal mail service because that's all that then prevailed through most of what is now King County. In 1871, Bellevue became an incorporated town and changed its name again, this time to Bellingham because of its abundance of salmon rivers found hereabouts. The history of Bellingham dates back at least to 1814 when Captains John Bell and William Perry explored Puget Sound and reported back on their findings including finding a salt water harbor they called Tacoma (from which Tacoma got its name). A year later George Vancouver surveyed Puget Sound and named it Columbia River after his home country Scotland. He also discovered two small islands he named Britannia Island and Isabella Island; these were later annexed by Seattle as part of land sales between Puget Sound Settlers Company and British Columbia during the gold Rush period (1858-65). By 1850, about 120 people lived in Bellevue with some agriculture being done along with smelting operations for aluminum production started around this time near present day Union Terminal on Lake Sammamish (present day Discovery Park Drive). Some years earlier a mill had been built at present day Moses Lake where lumber was processed into boards before shipment across Canada or America via steamboats up the Snake River valley until 1880 when electric power arrived making mills obsolete. It wasn't until 1888 when a man by the name of George Pogue moved from Bellevue to start an ice cream shop on First Street close to today's Central Library building which would become one of America's first commercial baking shops open 24/7 serving up everything from doughnuts to pie crusts while locals enjoyed hot chocolate outside during summertime!In 1911 Clarence Knoepfli organized a group called "The Citizens' Band" who played music throughout town square even going so far as hiring local women singers like Fannie Flagg (the sister singer behind hit song “What’s My Line?”)to lip sync tunes outdoors! The first settlers to Bellingham were Alexander Graham Bell and his family who established a farmstead in what is now downtown Bellingham in 1851. The town was incorporated as a village in 1907 and became an incorporated city in 1959. As of the 2010 census, its population was 3,026 people. In 1865, John Ayer founded Ayer's Mill which soon became one of the largest mills on Puget Sound. In 1872, James Cohan opened his grocery store in downtown Bellingham which became known as "Cohan's Drug Store". In 1915, George Hearn renovated and enlarged Ayer's Mill into what is now Hearn Industries Incorporated with over 150 employees. In 1928 Jens Christensen opened Jens Christensen & Sons hardware store on First Street which became one of the longest running businesses in town. The business was sold to Edmond Safeway Stores Incorporated in 1991 and closed down by Safeway in 2003 after thirty years of operation. In 1957 Nelson Ladd opened Ladd Paper Company which remains open today as Ladd Paper Museum about paper products from around the world including local paper products from Bellingham. 1) Alexander Graham Bell - Located Downtown on 1st St., these pioneers started their own mill/store on this site (1851). They later moved to Aberdeen before moving back home to start their own company that would become NPR fame (1928). 2) John Ayer - Founded Ayer’s Mill & Grocery Chain around 1865; Became one of Puget Sound’s Top Employers by 1870 (in 1914). After becoming head officer for SEIU Local 821 (#10), he helped organized Seattle’s labor movement starting with $5 worth of raw cotton purchased at auction! The first European to visit the area was Captain John July, who sailed through what is now Puget Sound on his Northwest Passage Expedition in 1811. In 1830, Swedish settler Johan Augustsson named the settlement "Bellingham" after his home town of Helsingborg, Sweden. In 1851, a group of Canadian voyageurs founded the Bellingham Post Office at an overlook on Point Defiance Bay. In 1865, Washington Territory was created from Oregon and parts of British Columbia. The new territory included most of what is now Bellingham County. The post office remained open until it closed in 1916 due to population growth and technological advances. In 1898, entrepreneur Gustavus Adolphus Snow founded a lumber company in Bellingham that became one of the largest lumber companies in North America. The company operated until 1933 when it merged with another lumber company to form International Harvester Corporation (IHC). IHC continued operations as International Harvester until 1984 when it merged with United States Steel to become US Steel Corporation (USTR).USTR continued operations as US Steel until 2011 when it was sold to Massey Energy for $3 billion.
