Bellingham, Washington is a city in the U.S. state of Washington. The population was 54,916 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous city in King County and third-most populous city in Puget Sound region combined. The Bellingham area has been inhabited by various cultures for thousands of years. The first European to visit the area was Juan de Fuca, who logged on the Queen Anne's Island Peninsula in 1692. In 1792, George Vancouver explored and mapped British Columbia and its coast before sailing northward along what is now Puget Sound to find land to sell to Russians as part of their treaty with Britain. He named one of his discoveries "Queen Anne's Island" after Princess Royal, wife of George II of Great Britain and mother of Prince Edward (later King George III). In 1851, when Seattle became a city, it included what is now Bellingham; however, no one moved to Bellingham until 1886 when James Laughlin built a sawmill there on Point Defiance Creek near present day Sammamish River Bridgehead Park. In 1894–1895 Jens Christensen began construction on Angle Lake Dam across Sammamish River from today's downtown core; due to high water levels caused by glaciers retreat over time this created flooding that destroyed many homes and businesses dating back to pre-contact times throughout much of Queen Anne's Island Peninsula including parts of Bellingham proper including SooLing Heights/Dundee Heights neighbourhoods which are still underwater despite being above water at high tide since record keeping began! After repairs were made some homes were rebuilt but most remain lost or submerged today as a result of Angle Lake Dam flooding during recent heavy rains which have also damaged many other properties upstream making it difficult even for amateur explorers such as myself(and others)to determine just how deep these neighbourhoods really are! One angle lake dam located within our neighbourhood that I am almost certain was completely destroyed during floods so please be very careful if you enter or cross flooded areas especially if there has been recent rain because often things go bad quickly here! #BellinghamFloods #AngleLakeDam #PrehistoricThreats

It is part of the Seattle-Tacoma metropolitan area. The first settler in what is now Bellingham was Major George Vancouver who explored and charted what is now Puget Sound in 1792 during his mapping trip across North America for British Columbia. Vancouver named the sound "Bellingham" after his home town of Bellingford in Cheshire, England. In 1853, entrepreneur John Jacob Astor moved his fortune to Bellingham Bay and started developing land around it into what is now Astoria and Everett shipyards. His investments led to much growth in maritime industry in Tacoma and Bellingham over the next several decades as lumber and shipbuilding boomed along with other businesses such as restaurants, hotels and retail stores. During World War II, Boeing created a facility here to build bomber aircraft that were used to bomb Japanese targets on Honshu Island near Tokyo. The plant played an important role in helping make Japan's war effort possible by producing bombers that could carry more payload than any other type of plane at the time - making them dangerous weapons that helped win World War II for the Allies. After Japan's surrender%, many of these planes were melted down and their parts used to create thousands of new Boeing planes which continue to be produced today outside Bellingham Airport right next door!
