Bellingham, Washington is a city in the U.S. state of Washington and the county seat of King County. It was founded in 1851 by Capt. George Vancouver and postmaster John Atlee as a small fur trading settlement on the Elliott River between Puget Sound and Alaska. The town grew rapidly based on its natural resources, including lumber, shipbuilding, coalmining, and seafood processing. In 1916, Bellingham became an incorporated municipality; it retained its independent status until 1973 when it merged with King County to form the current City of Seattle. The history of Bellingham begins with Captain George Vancouver's arrival in 1851 as part of his explorations southward along the Elliott River corridor following Inktomiutl Creek recommendations from Chief Sealtha (formerly Tse-tsek). Vancouver selected the site for his new trading post because it offered excellent access to timber and other resources such as salmonid fisheries located north of present-day Seattle. Although originally called Fort Elliot after British explorer Sir John Franklin's discovery in 1797 of Northwest Passage through what is now Canada, Vancouver named his new settlement after himself due to his belief that "the place would be famed throughout all North America for its great abundance of pelts." The first permanent residents arrived at Fort Elliot in December 1851 under the leadership of prominent local men such as Amos Kendall and David Thompson before moving into their own houses next door to where they lived until 1861 whenSeattle was founded adjacent to Elliott River estuary1 Although initially short-lived due to shortages brought about by early logging operations on land that later became part of downtown Seattle2 (and which continue today), Bellingham quickly emerged as one of WA's leading ports for trade with Alaska3 thanks in part to its natural resources: loggers found valuable stands of Douglas fir trees along Elliott River banks which were later refined into lumber4 During this time period too much heat caused extensive damage to both buildings and crops over a period spanning several weeks beginning around mid November 18506 but mercifully no lives were lost or much harm resulted thanks largely to prompt responses from local farmers7 However during darker times like these there was also plenty opportunity for humor8 including an episode where people gathered together outside Fort Elliot during dinner service only to find that their landlord had left without paying rent9 . A more serious event occurred some time later when two privateers collided while sailing upriver10 resulting in three dead crewmen11 One significant development associated with this period came when Tacoma smelter owner James Hormel decided he needed additional supplies immediatley so he moved production eastward out past Mercer Island12 ultimately leading Tacoma industrialization13
