Bellingham, Washington (population: 24,854) is a city in King County, Washington. It is the county seat of King County and the largest city on the Olympic Peninsula. The population was 26,428 at the 2010 census. The first Europeans to visit what is now Bellingham were American traders and missionaries who arrived in 1792 as part of a larger effort by George Vancouver to explore North America. British explorer Wesley Morin also explored the peninsula in 1792 before his ship ran into difficulty near present-day Olympia, then abandoned his attempt to find a route back home. In 1805, Commodore James Cook sailed past Puget Sound on his way south and discovered Bellingham Bay when he anchored off shore on May 1st of that year. The town soon grew up around Cook's discovery and became known as "Bellingham", after him. In 1834, Seattle was founded as an independent town neighboring Olympia and becoming increasingly important as an agricultural center due to its location at the mouth of Hood Canal which provided easy access to water resources for growing crops such as wheat and rice. However, due to its strategic location relative to Seattle's growth and lack of rail service, Bellingham lost importance until World War II when airfields were built nearby for both military purposes and Boeing's Aircraft Production Facility (later Baldwin Aircraft). After World War II ended, Bellevue replaced Tacoma as the primary city government with a consolidated government structure in 1963 based upon wards within King County; this arrangement continued until 1999 when it was replaced by single-member districts using partisan Voting Rights Act apportionment rules. From 1976 through 1984, Bellevue also had brief periods of mayoralty under two different leaders before coming under full mayoral control again from 1997 through 2001under Mayor Arnie Finkbeiner while still serving on the City Council. The modern firearms industry began with the creation of the revolver in 1848. The first continuously operated handgun, the Colt 1851 Navy six-shot percussion cap revolver, was successfully tested in 1852. This weapon, which had a locked breech and hammer system, became one of the most popular handguns ever made. In 1860, Samuel Colt introduced his first repeating ballistic rifle known as the American Rifle. This firearm used a rotating bolt to fire rounds from a magazine. It was very inaccurate but proved useful for target shooting at close range.
In 1892, Bellingham was named the administrative center for what is now Washington. It was a small town of about 2,000 people when it was founded and slowly grew as businesses and residents moved in. The location made it an ideal place to raise crops and manufactures, which led to the town's nickname "the breadbasket of the Northwest." The first post office in Bellingham opened in 1894. By 1907, the population had reached 5,000 people and by 1920, it had grown to 12,500. The city became a county seat in 1912 and expanded rapidly due to its importance as a transportation hub. In 1925, the city built the first municipally owned water system in Washington state. Bellingham has seen many dramatic changes throughout its history – from being an agricultural community to becoming one of the most industrialized cities in Washington State. Today, it is home to several universities and businesses including Amazon Web Services Inc., Microsoft Corporation, Boeing Co., Costco Wholesale Membership Association (CWA), KIRO Radio Broadcasting Company (KRCW), Starbucks Coffee Company (SBUX) and many more.
The first settler in what is now Bellingham was Captain John Endicott, who arrived in 1792. The town was founded on the western side of Puget Sound, east of present-day Seattle. The initial population numbered only a few hundred and it was not until 1854 that Bellingham had a post office. In 1908, the city was named for Admiral George Dewey and his wife Clara Maxwell Childs Dewey.
