Bellingham, Washington is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 9,821 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of King County. The Bellingham-Langley Ferry crosses Elliott Bay and connects the two towns. The first settlers in what is now Bellingham were French Canadian trappers who checked out of Fort Vancouver on the mainland in 1792 to look for new land to explore. They named their new settlement "Bellingham" after Captain John Bell (1740–1806), senior member of the Virginia Company's North West Expedition that explored Canada's west coast in 1795 and 1796. In 1810, when British troops burned Seattle during the War of 1812, they burned part of Bellingham as well because it had supported American forces against the British invaders. In 1814, when Congress created King County,WA from parts of Puget Sound Territory it annexed portions of Bainbridge Island and Whatcom County including Bellingham; however much later this annexation was rescinded by Governor James Kapp on grounds that Puget Sound Territory should have been divided into northern and southern counties instead of being annexed almost entirely by one agency. In 1870, a group of businessmen led by Augustus Ewing purchased an old mill site on Snohomish River north of present-day downtown for $1 million dollars. Work began on building a large pulp mill there in 1871 but construction stopped due to financial problems. The mill operated until 1924 when it finally closed down due to its excessive pollution which caused health problems for workers and nearby residents for many years thereafter. A second predecessor to Western Electric Corporation was founded here in 1905 by brothers Samuel Morse (1804–1875) and Alfred Vail (1807–1900). Samuel Morse invented telephone technology while Alfred Vail developed what became known as sound broadcasting using giant wax cylinders called phonographs which could be played back like records with sound only required when wanted or needed for religious services such as Sunday school teaching or parish services etc.. Western Electric Corporation changed its name to NBCUniversal in 1996 after acquiring General Electric Company's television business worldwide; although NBCUniversal has since been rebranded several times more variously including Comcast/NBC Universal Entertainment Europe and Time Warner Bros./New York City Media Ventures among others throughout its history (see also Wikipedia article about NBCUniversal). Although originally headquartered at Rockefeller Center until raisings early 2007,[4] it has now moved across Wall Street into One New York Plaza located near Times Square South between 5th Avenue South & Sixth Avenue South – just south of Broadway between those two streets – making it easily accessible from all over Manhattan via Midtown subway lines[5].
The area around Bellingham, Washington was first settled by the Cheyenne and Arapaho people in the late 18th century. In 1792, Lt. George Vancouver explored Puget Sound and found the Strait of Juan de Fuca between Elliott Bay and what is now Mount Baker. He named the strait after Captain John Edward Cook, who explored it in 1779-1782. The first European to visit what is now Bellingham was Pierre Dorion, a French fur trader who visited the region in 1792.
