The first person to live in Bellingham was George Vancouver, who arrived in 1792. He built a trading post on the current site of Puget Sound University, and started a successful fur-trade business. In 1819, he married Catherine Atwater, who helped spread Christianity through the region. The Atwater family ran a grocery store and flour mill until they sold the business in 1875 to James H. Hewitt. Hewitt served as mayor of Bellingham from 1889 to 1895 and as governor of Washington from 1897 to 1901. During his time as mayor, Hewitt developed one of Bellingham's most popular tourist attractions--the USS Constitution Museum.
