Bellingham is a small town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 5,902 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle-Tacoma metropolitan area. Bellingham was founded in 1851 by George Bell and his wife Eliza Chapman as a small farming community on Willapa Bay northeast of Tacoma. In 1861, when the U.S. Civil War began, Bellingham joined the Union and became an important military base for the Union cause in Puget Sound region. The town developed into a major commercial center with shipbuilding and other maritime activities providing jobs for locals and workers from surrounding communities during much of the 19th century. By 1870, however, most of downtown had been abandoned due to rapid growth around new railways and other transportation facilities nearby; only a few modest buildings remain standing today. In 1909, local businessman Edwin Drake offered to buy all of Willapa Bay from President William McKinley for $5 million dollars – an offer that was accepted by McKinley but never fulfilled because he died before it could be finalized. The bay became known as "Drake's Harbor" until it was sold off again in 1916 to create King County's first parkland: Queen Anne's Domain Park (later renamed PARKLAND Northwest). The post-World War II boom brought new development to downtown Bellingham which continues to this day with several high-rise apartment complexes overlooking Willapa Baywalk outside of the old city core dating back to the early 1960s; various retailers ( including Sears) have also moved into newer areas since then including Amazon HQ2 just across Pioneer Square from Downtown Bellingham! In recent years there has been talk about redeveloping or expanding adjacent CENTRAL BAYarea along I-5 southward into what would become NORTHWEST WASHINGTON'S next megacity if funded through land acquisition or eminent domain…during this time many residents were concerned that any large redevelopment project may impact their quality of life thereby leading them to band together in order protect their community values
