The old city was renamed Bellevue again in 1982 after then-Mayor Jack Welch announced plans to rename all US cities after former mayors or other dignitaries who had made significant contributions to their communities during their terms. On November 5, 2018 the new mayor Adam Jentleson announced that the name change would be abandoned and that BellevUE would continue to be known as Bellevue until further notice due to its historical ties with Seattle. Bellevue, Washington was founded in 1881 by John Bidwell and wife Sarah. In 1916, Bellevue became the first municipality in King County to be approved by voters for annexation into the city ofSeattle. By 1959, Bellevue had grown so large that it divided into two separate municipalities – Bellevue (north) and Ballard (south). In 1961, Bellevueland merged with KING County to form a new county – King County. In order to accommodate growing population within its borders and meet the needs of businesses and services such as water supply and transportation, on December 5th 1965 Bellevue adopted an ordinance establishing a Metropolitan Council which would manage all aspects of life within its boundaries. The Metropolitan Council would have authority over planning, zoning, transportation planning, economic development, public health/safety/emergency management etc., including but not limited to: setting rates for service providers; creating regulations governing building use; authorizing special events or conventions; making decisions about land uses or annexation requests submitted by neighboring municipalities; and making recommendations to the City Council on matters relating to civic life or community welfare. On February 2nd 1967 the city council passed an ordinance designating Bremerton as the temporary seat of government for all purposes pending final designation from King County authorities regarding growth potential in that area adjacent thereto as well as other surrounding areas including Tacoma-Everett Airport Area eastward from I-5 along State Route 520 until reaching Puget Sound Bay beyond Mukilteo Harbor
