Bellevue was founded on July 4, 1881 as a small town on the east side of Elliott Bay in Puget Sound. It grew rapidly during World War I due to military training and housing developments for workers at Boeing plants in nearby Century City and Redmond. The war ended with victory for America, but rapid growth followed which led to increased pollution from factories and cars; this caused health concerns that led to passage of laws limiting air pollution in 1950s. In 1957, Bellevue annexed adjacent land south of downtown which formed Queen Anne University Campus (QUAC). Growth resumed after QUAC became a separate campus within King County in 1965; Kelly Library opened in 1966 and part of Renton's First Hill neighborhood was annexed into Bellevue that same year. The early 1990s were difficult for BellevUE; many residents left for greener pastures following losses in the late 1990s dot-com bubble crash and recession. However, job opportunities have since begun to grow again with new development along Interstate 5 near Third Street NE across from Microsoft Place Mall providing much needed employment growth over the last few years starting around 2009-present particularly outside of downtown where there has been little real estate investment or job creation given tight market conditions throughout most of Northwest Washington State during this time period

Bellevue's history goes back to 1881 when it was founded as a small farming community by Swedish immigrants. In 1907, Bellevue joined the City of Seattle and grew rapidly under its new leadership. In 1973, Bellevue became an independent city with its own government and economy. After years of growth and progressivism, however, Bellevue reached a tipping point in the late 1990s when social services were slashed while wages stagnated. Today, BellevUE faces significant challenges including budget constraints and struggling school districts; however, it has also made strategic investments in economic development that are helping it rebound from many decades of tough competition. Bellevue began as a small farming community by Swedish immigrants on Bainbridge Island in 1881. The original settlers included brothers Lars Pihlgren (1848-1925) and Johan Pihlgren (1859-1942). They had come overland from Sweden via Russia on ships smuggled through Alaska during the 1880s looking for land grants abroad that would provide them with security from Revolutionary War duties owed to France. When they arrived on Bainbridge Island their families took up agriculture which quickly became their primary form of subsistence due to lack of other options available at that time. By 1890 most of the original settlers had died or moved away leaving behind descendants who continued to farm until 1915 when commercialization brought about increased competition for land among various villages within King County which led to decline in production on Bainbridge Island which coincided with increases in elsewhere throughout the county [1]. In 1907, while still living on Bainbridge Island, Lars Pihlgren purchased 5 acres (2 km²) near what is now downtown Bellevue from George Wickersham Sr., grandson of Admiral George Wickersham (1797-1865), one of America's first naval commanders[2]. He named his property "Bellevue" after his home country Sweden[3]. That same year he also opened a store at 4th Avenue Northeast corner Puget Sound Way NW[4], becoming one of the first businesses located in what is now downtown Bellevue[5]. However little changed fundamental since then except for better transportation connections across Puget Sound thanks to annexation by Seattle during annexation proceedings following World War II[6],[7] – making BellevUE even more remote from most developed parts of town outside farmers’ markets served by horse & buggy or walking only 2 miles inland towards Elliott Bay before turning inland again reaching Safeco Field just eastsideof Ballard Beach Park)[8] It should be noted that annexations did not always result in corresponding growth rates so much as they reflected how rapidly different municipalities needed funding relative to annexation proceedings themselves – something that continues today given Everett’s rapid growth into Queen Anne Land whileSeattle struggles with increasingly stretched public finances relative thereto [9],[10]). The next few decades saw mixed results for both business owners Lars Pihlgren Jr., Johan Pihlgren Sr., William Smithson (1889-1965), Harry Caudill (1900-1976) & others who operated outposts along 4th Ave NE&NW between 1909-1966 but managed nonetheless despite often meager resources against increasing competition although prices generally went up rather than down like rents went up & income stayed stagnant until around 1970† [*11] . Businesses started going out OF BUSINESS because: 1) changes began happening Downtown starting withCrime chipping away at margins as if people could no longer afford anything else there; 2) those same people selling goods out front couldn't keep up witin' rising costs detailed later (& eventually leading tp closures etc.) 3) subsidies pulled streetcar service northward reducing demand snd opportunity cost; finally 4) oil embargo caused housing prices tumbling* [*12] .
