Bellevue, Washington is a city in King County,Washington. The population was 34,868 as of the 2010 census. Bellevue is one of the most diverse cities in the United States and home to many cultures including Japanese, Armenian, and African American. The area that now constitutes Bellevue was originally inhabited by the Chehalis tribe which means "water people." The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Bellevue were fur traders from Russia. In 1851, James Everett Forbes settled in what is now Bellevue and began trading with Indians. By 1855, the town had a population of 350 and became known as "The noisy capital of Puget Sound." In 1902, when Seattle was founded, Bellevue joined Seattle as its second city after Tacoma. At first it functioned primarily as a supply stop on the journey to downtown Seattle. However soon business began to grow around transportation links between Seattle and Tacoma and BellevUE emerged as an important center for trade within King County. In 1918-1920s two large industrial plants were built here: First Chemical Company (now Boeing) at 145th Street SW and NE 122nd Avenue SE; then Wartime Paper Corporation at 117th Street SW and NE 126th Avenue SE. Both plants left behind large numbers of jobs in their wake which helped form the backbone of local employment until recently The Douglas Aircraft plant opened on Mercer Island in 1937 making it one of America's largest airplane manufacturing companies before World War II ended production there following bombing raids by Nazi Germany . Today only a few foundations remain from this era including an old building housing company offices on Mercer Island still leased out for office purposes since 1957
