Bellevue is located on the east side of Lake Washington and shares borders with Seattle to the south and west; Bothell to the north and east; Kirkland to the northwest; and Redmond to the northeast. The first European settlers in Bellevue were Scottish farmers who arrived in 1851. In 1881, Bellevue became an incorporated town. In 1916, it became a city after being annexed by Seattle. Bellevue has been home to a variety of businesses and organizations over its history including Boeing Aircraft Company (1935-1946), Microsoft Corporation (1981-1993), The Boeing Company (1996-present), Amazon Web Services (2001-present), Starbucks Coffee & Tea Company (2007-present), KIRO Radio Network (2005-2015)

The percentage of people living in suburbs increased from 15 percent to 30 percent during this time period; however, many residents still preferred to live within the city limits because of its historical attractions and infrastructure including schools, hospitals and shopping malls that draw people from all over King County. The economic decline of the late 20th century caused much pain for BellevUE citizens but also led to some overdue changes such as more public transportation options (including buses) and better access to parks for children during school hours which has helped reverse some of the trends seen throughout recent decades
