Bellevue, Washington is a city in the U.S. state of Washington and the county seat of King County. It was founded in 1851 by lumber baron James K. Polk and named for him, with the intent to serve as a embarkation point for Pacific Northwest lumber exports. The city's population was 8,856 at the 2010 census. Bellevue is located on Puget Sound between Seattle and Tacoma, about north of downtown Seattle and east of Redmond, Olympia and Bellevue proper are all considered suburbs of Seattle. As a result of its location on Puget Sound, Bellevue has become an important commercial center for both Greater Seattle and the surrounding area as well as a major transportation hub serving both cities. In recent years Bellevue has also become home to a number of high-technology companies such as Microsoft, Amazon Web Services, Salesforce and Nokia Siemens Networks USA Inc.. Bellevue is a city in the King County, Washington metropolitan area. The population was 62,092 at the 2010 census. Bellevue is located on the Issaquah-Bellevue-Fremont corridor and is adjacent to Seattle. It lies within Redmond Township on the east side of Lake Washington and within Mercer Island on the west side of Lake Washington. Bellevue was founded in 1851 as a logging town, named for General James K. Philbrook, who commanded an American brigade that invaded British Columbia during the War of 1812. The town site was chosen because it lay near two forks of the mainstem Fraser River which joined up near downtown Bellevue to form what would become one body of water. It had already been called by other names when it first came into being: Frenchtown (1850), Logging Point (1851), Indian Town (1852), Upper Canada Settlement (1853), and Harbor View Landing Place (May 3, 1854). The city was incorporated on April 14, 1861. In 1865, Bellevue became part of Puget Sound Naval Shipyard when that shipyard was established at Bremerton by Admiral John Waddell as part of his naval buildup in preparation for the Civil War. AtBremertonand elsewhere in Puget Sound Navy Yard workers constructed large ships such as USS Olympia and USS Tacoma while also constructing smaller vessels such as HMS Inflexible and HMS Euryalus. After World War II ended with Japan's surrender in 1945, many naval veterans moved to Bellevue where they formed their own communities inside or outside of Bellevue proper; these include SeaTac International Airport workers who built Marina del Rey along South Waterfront Drive from 1959 to 1973; Shoreline Community Development Corporation workers who built Sunnyside Heights between 1961 and 1984; Pacific Northwest National Laboratory scientists who built Lawrence Livermore Laboratory between 1966 and 1998; Delta Air Lines employees who founded Lindbergh Field Airport nearby from 1957 until its closure in 1991; several thousand military retirees living aboard Base Camp David before its closure in 2001 In 1955, Bellevue annexed parts of Mercer Island which then became known as Pioneer Square after Seattle's first white settler - Samuel Merrill - although Pioneer Square never had a commercial interest beyond providing land for schools, churches and other community buildings proximate to Central Park so that people could watch airplanes landing or taking off from Sea-Tac Airport (now Boeing Field) situated across South Wall Street from Pioneer Square - officially becoming "Pioneer Square" only after annexation into BellevUE
