Bellevue was founded in 1881 by two brothers, George and John Bellevue. The Bellevues had come to the area from Seattle, Washington. They started a small grocery store on First Avenue in what is now the Bellevue neighborhood of Seattle. In 1885, they opened a larger store on Second Avenue in what is now downtown Bellevue. In 1898, they added a meat market to their business and began selling groceries and horse supplies as well. In 1905, the brothers merged their businesses with those of their brother-in-law Harry Wohlgemuth to become Wohlgemuth & Bellevue Grocery Co., Ltd. (W&B). On July 1, 1912, the company changed its name to King's Grocery Co., Ltd. (KGCL). KGCL became one of the largest grocery stores in Seattle and soon became known for its high quality food products and service. In 1954, KGCL merged with Safeway Incorporated to form Safeway Corporation (SWA).
