Bellevue, Washington is a city in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 25,644 at the 2010 census. Bellevue is part of the Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue metropolitan statistical area and it is the second most populous municipality in King County afterSeattle. The city's name comes from an Indian word meaning "food place" or "settlement." The first European to visit Bellevue was Captain George Vancouver on September 10, 1792. He named the spot Point Defiance Bay because of its remote location and noted that there was no shipwrecks nearby and no other Indians living in that area. The City of Bellevue incorporation took place on January 1, 1856. It needed approval from both the Territorial Congress and King County because it would be contiguous with Tacoma. On July 5, 1861 Bellevue became the capital of King County with a new government building erected on what is now First Avenue South in downtown Bellevue. The Puget Sound Rapid Transit System (Puget Sound RR) opened when Bellevue became a town on November 4, 1919 as one of three cities along with Seattle and Tacoma to contribute $27 million towards construction of what would become today's Puget Sound RR system. At first only trains ran between these cities; however, by 1933 services had extended throughout all three municipalities including Everett and Bothell which joined later that year. When World War II ended without any major hostilities taking place in Western Washington or Northern Oregon within our borders (the war being fought by local forces), many people decided to move back into those areas due to new opportunities for economic growth after 1945 – especially Spokane which was booming thanks to its natural resources sector; however much like most things during peacetime during WWII many jobs were lost due to wartime restrictions placed on exports by both belligerents (production quotas). In 1856, Kingman County was created from parts of Grant and Kingman counties; Bellevue became part of this new county as well. The city's claim to fame began with its annexation by Seattle in 1893 following a popular campaign led by Mayor John Denny. That same year saw the opening of Everett Park on Westlake Avenue Northeast - today known as Puget Sound National Forest - which offered much needed open space within walking distance for residents to enjoy before it was annexed into Seattle proper over time. With rapid growth around the turnofthecentury came high-density housing with streetcar service linking many neighborhoods together; retail strips sprang up all around town; and businesses such as JCPenney & Co., Sears Roebuck & Co., Ford Motor Company, Pacific Telephone Company et al quickly took root inside what would soon become one Of America's most vibrant cities – home to some 30% or more Americans born outside its borders by 1910! By 1920s Bellevue had become almost completely white Anglo Protestant despite significant minorities black (African Americans constituted about 5%), Native American (Alaska Natives made up 2%), Asian (Hawaiians were numerous), Puerto Ricans (many arrived during WWI), Hispanic immigrants (Mexicans among them) as well as several thousand Jews who had moved there since 1907 when Congregationalist missionaries started settling in Bellevue amid increasing anti-Semitic sentiment throughout much Eastern US due largely to economic depression back then – but no synagogue existed! A large fire destroyed most buildings in downtown December 1924 which caused much damage including $1 million worth ($24 million today) worth replacement structures erected over ensuing years mostly utilizing precast iron framing typical for early 20th century U S architecture which severely limited rebuilding options until World War II when steel frame construction became popularized leading to extensive rebuildings effort resulting in massive expansion both eastward across 1st Ave NE towards Ballard/ Lynnwood and westward into Seattle’s Beacon Hill neighborhood – eventually totaling nearly 200 blocks covering 4square miles !
