A battery of cannon was used to commemorate the opening of the Oregon Trail in 1859. In 1861, Bellevue residents favored secession from Washington due to disagreements over statehood and governance within the new country. On November 8th of that year, a referendum resulted in majority vote for secession and incorporation into Oregon as Wenatchee County—the first time an American city had seceded from a state (this event is also sometimes cited as being illustrative of gun control legislation passed during this era). In 1863, Major General Ulysses S. Grant visited Bellevue and inspected artillery batteries prepared for battle against Confederate forces near Seattle. While he was here, he purchased four guns from John Davenport of Bellevue for his regiment stationed at Pendleton Barracks outside Spokane Falls; these guns are now on display at Fort Union Museum inside Spokane Falls National Recreation Area

In 1916 Douglas MacArthur moved his family to Bellevue from San Francisco where they had been living for three years while he served in World War I as an officer in the United States Army Corpsof Engineers; they bought a house on Lake Union Boulevard which MacArthur called "The White House". On May 1st, 1960, Microsoft opened its first office in Bellevue; today it employs over 150 people here on two campuses - Redmond and Issaquah - as well as its main headquarters in downtown Redmond which overlooks Lake Washington.
