Bellevue, Washington is a town in Clark County, Washington, United States. The population was 7,812 at the 2010 census. Bellevue was founded in 1881 by three brothers from St. Clair Township, Michigan and named after Bellevue Manor in Sussex County, England. The first post office was established on October 17, 1881. Bellevue has a long and diverse history that includes early pioneer families such as the Harts who ranched near the town for over 60 years; developers like John Denton who built what is now Kiewit Tower on land donated by the Harts; and residents of Bellevue who have made their mark including Olympian track runner Carl Lewis and business people such as Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen. The first grocery store opened in Bellevue in 1902 and served the community until 1929 when it moved to Everett. In 1907 Bellevue had its only hotel which burned down but new hotels were built later in the decade including one called "The Vail" which still stands today. In 1928 Harry Kapp purchased 10 acres adjacent to his home on First Street from George Washington Carver for $10 per acre (equivalent to $ billions today). This allowed him to build what is now Kiewit Tower which housed his commercial businesses from 1927 until his death in 1974. Other notable buildings located nearby during this time include The White House (1927), Dickenson Hall (1929), Jethro Gibbs Elementary School (1930), WSU Annex Pavilion (1931), Donatello Catholic Church (1932) and American Legion Post #221(1934). Bellevue experienced some growth during World War II with many stores opening up along First Avenue between Pearl Harbor Boulevard and Sprague Avenue that served military personnel barracks as well as civilians living around Tacoma or Seattle. After the war there was a decline since most of these businesses closed down or changed ownership before being replaced by newer facilities within a few years of opening such as Sears Roebuck & Co.'s main campus becoming incorporated into Bellevue High School that opened in 1949 while Main Street continued serving primarily as an arterial road leading into downtown BellevUE until it was realigned around 2001 when much of downtown property became part of SEIU's Local 1199 headquarters complex known today simply as "the building". In 1967onthe original elementary school building located at 6th Street Northeast and Broadway NE was replaced by an expanded high school that serves students from both Parkside Drive/ nas Parkview Way eastbound and Sylvan Way westbound along with other areas surrounding it north/south including veteran housing developments extending all the way to Snohomish County line providing education for kids up through college degrees without having to leave town although some students do attend Kitsap Community College just south of town off highway 542 about 3 miles east of town limits.). Today's elementary school building was also renovated inside out starting with ground zero on May 1st 2006 using funds provided by local taxpayers following extensive damage done to it by then Mayor Norm Rice's administration prior thereto resulting from then State Rep Rick Peterson's campaign promise during his 2007 run for office against Norm Rice). A new library has been constructed next door across fromSEIU's main headquarters complexformerly known simplyas "the building".
Bellevue was founded in 1892 by George and Clara Barton as the Bellevue Hospital District. The city was named for General James K. Polk, who had been the first U.S. president to visit Japan and recommended that the United States establish a consulate in Tokyo. The original Bellevue Hospital was built on land donated by Mrs. Barton and opened in 1894. It served as a hospital for women and children before becoming a general hospital in 1927. In 1949, Bellevue became one of the first cities in Washington state to adopt an open-air shopping mall when it opened at its current location on First Avenue NE.
