Businesses also began expanding into residential areas near Lake Union where they could offer affordable housing to workers who needed space but didn't want or couldn't afford a house elsewhere in town. During World War II, Bellevue played an important role in supplying munitions for the war effort from its factories located within walking distance of downtown. After the war ended however, many industry jobs left Bellevue behind as companies relocated away from waterfront towns like Tacoma or Seattle due to competition from new technology firms or newly opened suburbs closer to Interstate 5 or Portofino Beach California (the original site for King County). With no major industries left standing after the war ended there wasn't much demand for housing among workers who had once depended on them; instead prices increased rapidly across all types of housing throughout town starting at $8 per square foot in 1950 before rising rapidly until they reached $25 per square foot by 1970! This increase led to much conflict between neighborhood residents who wanted lower prices while developers tried to maintain high levels of production while ensuring low rents so that families could remain intact) which can still be seen today despite efforts by some people within town government over recent decades to reduce these disparities
