Battle Ground is a small town in Thurston County, Washington, United States. The population was 909 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wenatchee-Tacoma metropolitan area. The community was founded in 1854 as Fort Battle Ground, after it was land won from the Yakima Nation in a battle near what is now Olympia. The fort served as an outpost on the Northern Pacific Railroad until it closed in 1914. In 1865, Battle Ground became part of what would become Thurston County when it was organized from parts of King and Snohomish counties. At its peak during World War II, Battle Ground had a population of 1,500 people; however, by 1945 the town had shrunk to fewer than 100 residents due to low demand for military housing and other services provided by the Army Corps of Engineers (ACE). Afterward, many residents moved away or left for various reasons; however, a few remain until today. In 1984–85, ACE built Camp Blanding which remains one of the most popular tourist attractions in Battle Ground today. In 1998–99, ACE developed and operated Camp Atwater which served as a training ground for US Coast Guard units during Operation Neptune's Spear that year's summer Olympics in Seattle. Currently used by law enforcement agencies as well as basketball and baseball teams from nearby Tacoma and Lakewood Ranch (Florida), Camp Blanding has been described as "the best place to stay while visiting Thurston County."
