Coffin opened an optometrist's business in what is now Pioneer Square Shopping Center. In 1881, J.H. Goode and Sons opened a store called "The Gilded Age Glasses" in what is now the basement level of the Pioneer Square Shopping Center. In 1906, Augustus Blevins became the first glassworker at The Gilded Age Glasses store and continued to operate that business until his death in 1914. In 1912, Simeon Ives opened an optician's office on First Street SW in Pioneer Square Shopping Center which he operated until his death in 1937. In 1938, Harry Fenton became owner of The Gilded Age Glasses store and continued to run it until his death in 1952. In 1953, Harry Fenton's son-in-law John Laughlin took over ownership of The Gilded Age Glasses store and ran it until his death in 1966. In 1967, Alcoa (now Aluminum) began manufacturing aluminum cans at their facility on Northeast 82nd Avenue NE in Battle Ground; this location would be its primary business structure for many years after that date. Alcoa also established a small plastics factory there beginning production around 1971-1972 that served as their primary suppliers for aluminum cans and other plastic products throughout much of the 1970s and early 1980s when aluminum prices were high due to shortages caused by OPEC oil embargo sanctions). The first European to visit Battle Ground was Capt. George Vancouver on July 14, 1792 during his exploration of the Northwest Coast of America. After landing on Puget Sound and exploring inland for two days he returned to British Columbia with illustrations and sketches of what he had seen. They were given to Rear Admiral Johnstone who sent them back to London as evidence that North America was not only discovered but also quite accessible by Europeans. In 1824, Battle Ground became the site of a skirmish between United States forces under General Arthur Stoneman and Mexican forces under Antonio López de Santa Anna after American General James Kieft's failed attempt to retake Mexico City from Santa Anna following an uprising against Spanish rule there in 1821. On May 6, 1861 Battle Ground became part of Washington when it was organized as a county by act of Congress following the Oregon Trail Campaigns around that time period which saw several engagements (the battle at Deep Creek being one) near what is now Olympia Fields Mall in Tacoma which ended with Ulysses S Grant's victory over Robert E Lee in April 1865 whileGeneral Alfred Terry fought at Monterrey Hill just northwest of town on October 15th 1865 which resulted in the death or capture or desertion rates for both sides approximately equal- about 50%. Battle ground has been home to many people through its history including: lumberjacks, miners, farmers, soldiers and their families who experienced warring armies; immigrants such as Russian Jews fleeing tsarist Russia during World War I; Japanese Americans interned during World War II; current residents various businesses like Amazon headquarters/headquarters building delivery workers/importers/manufacturers etc.; recent immigrants from Asia (Hui Chinese), Latin America (Thais) and other parts of the world who have come here since 2000s especially those working here at Amazon HQ2 construction sites across Everett and Redmond
