In 1851, Battle Ground was named after General George Washington's home in Fairfax County. The town was located on the east side of the Spokane River and became a center for fur trade and industry. In 1874, Battle Ground incorporated as a municipality. In 1865, the U.S. Army established Camp Butler on the west side of the river to provide troops with access to irrigation water supplies and timberlands near Spokane Falls. With advances in transportation and communication technology, Camp Butler grew into one of the largest military installations in Northwest America. The Forks of the Spokane River were an important stopover for wagon trains moving through what is now eastern Washington during wintertime; this allowed traders and travelers from Oregon to sell goods at market prices while providing shelter from weather conditions. On July 12, 1878, Battle Ground residents voted to incorporate as a city. On December 5th of that same year, Battle Ground became one of ten municipalities in Washington state that joined forces with Seattle to form "the great Northwest". During World War II (1939-1945), Battle Ground served as an airfield for Boeing Aircraft Company planes manufacturing munitions; it also hosted processing plants for Tacoma's taconite ore production which led to creation of Tacoma Taconite Corporation in 1942 ().

Post-World War II growth slowed until 1990 when a Walmart store opened up on Main Street which led to more development including a housing project that began construction in 2001 known as "The Commons". The project ended up being completed before it started because of funding problems with local government; however, some parcels adjoining The Commons have since been redeveloped into commercial properties such as an arts center and new elementary school called Parkview Elementary School whichopened in 2004 adjacent to what used to be Walmart’s site. In recent years there has been discussion about developing or reopening portions of Battle Ground which sit undeveloped or underdeveloped due to concerns about preserving resources like water supplies and open space while also accommodating future growth potential; these discussions are still ongoing but progress has recently been made towards resolving some issues surrounding development within Battle Ground itself including awarding property owner rights over certain areas while also undertaking public hearings on specific plans that would call for alterations/ updates to existing infrastructure within town limits

In 1801, Battle Ground became part of Washington Territory when it was established following the US statehood referendum. In 1847, Battle Ground incorporated as a village under the name of Weedonville after Averell Harriman, then Secretary of War in Congress and later President Ulysses S. Grant's chief aide during the American Civil War. In 1907, Battle Ground changed its name to Weedonville again due to objections from residents who felt that it sounded too similar to Weedenville, Virginia which had just been renamed Lynchburg following popular demand within Virginia itself Weddonville experienced significant growth during World War II with an influx of soldiers and civilians brought over by the military for duty in nearby Tacoma and Bellevue Fields areas. However, Weedonville's growth slowed after war ended; however there has been recent development around including a new elementary school built in 2007 adjacent to Interstate 5 which opened up much needed retail space for local businesses
