In 1872, two men from Asotin County arrived to platted what would become Battle Grounds Township and name it after themselves – John C.; “Gus” Prentice – and James Gee – both natives of Baltimore, Maryland. On February 14th of that year, Battle Ground had its first election when Aldermen John Gee (D) and James Gee (I) were elected to serve three one-year terms each with a limit of two years each term; effective March 1st, 1872. In 1875, battle ground was incorporated as a village by voters under an act passed by the Territorial Legislature on November 9th following passage of territorial laws establishing Village form government within King County In 1902 battle ground became part of Thurston County when Thurston county was organized from parts of Kitsap andKing counties On December 2nd 1914 local citizens created School District No 8 which included all present day Thurston Counties including BattleGround In 1916 local citizens accomplished school district organization by passing an act entitled "An Act To Establish Municipal Schools in Thurston County" This act constituted Thurston county's first school district Through hard work by dedicated parents our children have learned how to read & write while they have also been taught about democracy & principles 3rd grade through 12th grade
