In Battle Ground, Washington, the town was founded in 1847 by pioneer settlers. The first gun shop in the area opened its doors in 1865. It was here that businesses of all sizes and shapes began to operate. Gunsmiths and armorers worked together to create rifles, pistols, shotguns and other firearms. Battle Ground is a census-designated place in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 4,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of theSeattle–Tacoma Metropolitan Area. The community was first settled in 1853 by Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz and his family as a small station on the Lewis and Clark expedition's route from St. Louis to Puget Sound. In 1865, Battle Ground became the site of a major battle between Ulysses S. Grant's forces and Confederate troops under General Robert E. Lee. The battle resulted in over 50 casualties on both sides and helped spur development around the battlefields including stores, hotels, schools and other businesses that continue to thrive today. In 1902 Battle Ground incorporated as a village with a population of 350 residents; it had grown rapidly due to its location near two major transportation hubs: Seattle and Tacoma (the then-largest city in Washington). The village changed hands several times until it was purchased by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen in 1984 for $US1 million ($2 million today). Allen intended to use Battle Ground as an expansion center for Redmond, but instead founded what would become Microsoft’s largest campus outside of North America – more than 12 square miles (30 km²) inside of downtown Redmond – which quickly grew into one of the most popular areas for job growth in town. Today, Battle Ground remains one of Redmond’s most vibrant neighborhoods with many quaint shops and restaurants lining Main Street. Nevertheless, it has remained an important cultural destination for residents in surrounding areas ever since.
