In 1882, Battle Ground became the home of the first American gun light company. The company was chartered by Congressman John J. Blanchard and operated out of a small building on State Street. The company, known as the United States Rifle Light Company, produced artificial light for night target practice and other military purposes. In 1908, Battle Ground was incorporated as a city under the name of Seattle. The city’s first police officer, Major General George Armstrong Custer, served as its first mayor from 1911 to 1912. The first store was built on State Route 299 and it became known as "The Green Store." In 1902, Battle Ground tragedy occurred when two students from nearby Seattle were killed by a group of boys while playing baseball on school property. A new high school opened in 1984 and has since become known as "The George Washington High School". In 1812, during the War of 1812, Battle Ground served as an important staging ground between General George Armstrong Custer's army attacking Detroit while General James Kapp's army invaded Canada (Kapp'sRaid), and General Winfield Scott's army invading Virginia (Scott raid). In 1814-1815 Battle Ground served as headquarters for Brigadier General Nathaniel Lyon during his march across Kentucky against Tecumseh's forces; it also saw action at Monongalia Station on October 16th when Lyon destroyed an Indian encampment near present day Mingo Junction in order to put an end to Indian resistance throughout Kentucky. 2nd Lieutenant Colonel Edward Phillips commanded battle ground militia regiment #5 from November 1861 until he resigned due to illness on December 12th 1861 . On December 14th 1861 Second Lieutenant Colonel John Hargrave assumed command of battalion#4 which had beenMustered Out two days earlier effective January 3rd 1862 due To ill health only leaving one man under arms at home defending community farmstead where he resided until recently located by family this summer
