BB guns were first introduced to Battle Ground in 1874. At that time, the town was located in the extreme northwest corner of Washington County and consisted of only a few homes. The population of Battle Ground was only 3,000 at the time. In 1875, a man by the name of George Stephenson brought a machine gun to Battle Ground from Canada. This machine gun was called the “Stevenson Gun” and it had an 8-inch barrel. It was very inaccurate and did not work well in battle. However, it made an interesting novelty item for residents of BattleGround. In 1876, a man named John Aiken brought his own BB gun to Battle Ground from Ohio. This BB gun had a 6-inch barrel and could kill small animals such as rabbits or squirrels with just one shot. The weapon became known as the “Aiken Gun” after its inventor, John Aiken. From 1876 until 1887, no other handguns were brought to Battle ground until Captain James Prentice developed a revolver which he called the “Prentice Rifle”. This revolver used .44 caliber rounds which were very effective in battle against Confederate soldiers. Unfortunately, this rifle did not take off due to its low calibre and it not being popular with soldiers on account of its weight and difficulty to hold steady during combat. In 1888, Captains Lewis Fenton and Samuel Blythe imported two handguns from France intoBattleground on behalf of Colonel John Custer at Fort Snelling (later Camp Douglas). According to the 2010 census, its population has decreased to 710 due to shrinking rural populations around it and gentrification wrought by nearby Seattleites and other city-dwellers. However, there are still small businesses that operate within Battle ground's boundaries including three farmers markets (one open every day) as well as a variety of restaurants and cafes inside or outside of town limits - giving it a sense of community even though residents can be located anywhere they choose within minutes' drive time on Interstate 5 or State Route 99A (the " paved road"). The large federal building/museum complex built on what is now Second Street NE between SR 99A (the "paved road") and I-5 provides excellent opportunities for public tours during regular business hours: 10am-5pm weekdays, 1pm-4pm Saturdays, 12pm-3pm Sundays except holidays; closed Mondays & Tuesdays since Sept 15th due to its holiday season shutdown schedule.
