In 1855, Battle Ground was founded by a group of farmers and settlers. In 1860, the town had a population of about 100 people. By 1870, Battle Ground had a population of around 500 people. The 1870 census counted 218 men, 109 women, and 24 children in the town. In 1903, theBattle Ground Board of Education was formed and the first school in Battle Ground opened its doors on December 6th. The first principal was Mrs. Lizzie Aitken who taught seventh grade until 1907 when she became superintendent of schools for Columbia School District #1 which included Battle ground. Mrs. Aitken served as Superintendent until her death in 1918. The battle between General Philip Sheridan’s Seventh Cavalry Regiment (Cavalry) and Lt Col Francis Biddle’s First Oregon Infantry Regiment (Infantry) took place on November 15th 1881 near what is now known as Harper Road northeast of Battle ground proper at an elevation of 1,500 feet above sea level with a intervening ridgeline that rises to 2,000 feet above sea level. During this engagement Private James Haddock was fatally shot by Lieutenant Colonel Biddle despite his best efforts to avoid it; Haddock would later die from his wounds four days later at the hands of Ulysses S Grant's forces during their march back northward from Washington Territory into Oregon Territory following their victory over Confederate General Robert E Lee at Appomattox Court House).

This event left an important legacy on this town as well as others in Washington County. Today, BattleGround enjoys a rich history that has been documented both through oral tradition and written records. Some famous battles fought at or near Battle ground include: Gettysburg (1863), Antietam (1864), Wilderness (1948), Chancellorsville (1861), Petersburg(1962) and Fallujah (2003).
