In terms of racial makeup: whites made up 61% of the population; black or African American residents made up 10%; Native American residents were 1%; Asian Pacific Islanders were 0% of the population; and other races accounted for 8%. The first permanent European settler in Battle Ground was George Vancouver on February 14, 1792 when he and his party of thirteen entered what is now Battle Ground from Bothell via Kettle Falls Road. He named it "New South Wales" after his home country of England and naming four other towns in the area - Everett, Mechanicsburg, Goldendale and Nisqually - also after British colonies or their capitals: London (Everett), Montreal (Mechanicsburg), Pittsburg (Goldendale) and Halifax (Nisqually). In 1846 Battle ground was made the site of an important Pony Express station on Puget Sound where mail from Seattle to Tacoma was delivered by horseback across Elliott Bay. The town's first post office opened in 1847 with Wm Halsey as mail clerk and later became locally known as "Halsey's Post Office." In 1865 Battle ground became the capital of King County; it again had its own post office until 1953 when it joined Bellevue-Everett-Mt Vernon as one of the five metropolitan statistical areas in Washington State. One significant event that occurred during this time was the May Day Massacre which took place outdoors at battle grounds between Native Americans and settlers around Puget Sound on May 1st 1861. All but three men convicted were executed by hanging at Walla Walla Jail near Suquamish River before their families could receive news about their whereabouts. This event has been called "the largest mass execution in America up to that time." Today Battle ground remains an important community with many businesses catering to its residents including a library, grocery store, two elementary schools and two high schools along with several parks including North Park Lake which has a full sized football field complete with dugouts for both teams; East Park which features tennis courts/badminton court/fitness track; West Park which includes a playground/creek; Stonehorse Golf Course located just north of town limits; Resurrection Cemetery just east of town limits containing over 120 gravesites dating back to pioneer days followed byREI distribution center completed in late 2006 adjacent to existing shopping mall then known as Towne Center Mall before being renamed Microsoft CityCenter following merger with nearby Redmond earlier this year A large number of people commute into downtown Bellevue for work or school while still others live close to amenities like lakeshore access or easy shopping opportunities like REI or Microsoft CityCenter providing all types of services needed day & night without having to leave their homes
