Bainbridge Island, Washington is a small island in Puget Sound located about 12 miles north of Seattle. The island was first settled by the Chilkat people and later by the Vancouver Island people. In 1851, Bainbridge Island became part of the United States when it was acquired from Britain as part of the Treaty of negotiated during the American-British War. The treaty ended with US victory and British defeat in that war. In 1855, Bainbridge Island became an incorporated town within King County and continued to be so until 1959 when it was annexed by Seattle. The scopes on Bainbridge Island were made primarily for hunting purposes or target shooting and were generally not used for astronomical observation. However, there are a few examples of telescopes dating back to before Confederation days which may have been used for some astronomical observations on Bainbridge Isle including one built in 1796 by James Kintyre who also built Kincaid Castle on nearby Islay (Island). Prior to Confederation Day in 1792, there were no scopes on Bainbridge Isle other than those found nearshore at Nisqually Bay. This changed with the construction of two large offshore towers called Canoe Head Towers located about midway between shipwrecks at Cape Flattery and Point Defiance Rock which served as sights for ships passing through Puget Sound during times when navigation was difficult due to shoals and sandbars along both coasts of North America. These platforms can still be seen today from a distance if one goes out onto Point Defiance Rock which is located just south of Canoe Head Tower. It should be noted that these towers did not serve as actual observatories but rather they were used as lookout points while ships passed around them! In 1876, Jethro Cooke installed a reflecting telescope at his home on Bainbridge Isle which he named "Herschel" after his deceased brother-in-law Benjamin Herschel who had helped develop optics in England prior to Confederation day. The telescope remained operative until 1914 when it was destroyed by fire caused by an improperly lit cigarillo! Unfortunately for Cooke, this event marked the end of amateur astronomy activity on Bainbridge Isle!! A more recent example Of A Large Reflection Telescope On An ISLAND IN PUGET SOUND WAS BUILT BY JOAN CHASE BACK IN THE 70S WITH AN ULTRA HIGH POWER CCD CAMERA SHE CALLED "RHODES". HER SCOPE WAS OPERATED FOR ABOUT 10 YEARS BEFORE IT WAS HELD UP BY A WINDblown ILLUMINATOR AND SOLD TO A FINE PAINTED AMERICAN MUSEUM IN LONDON AS PART OF THEIR COLLECTION OF SPACE ART!

During this time, Bainbridge Island also became popular with boaters because it had good water supplies, sandy beaches, large areas for fishing (especially from oysters), a variety of bird rookeries (including some considered world-classpredatory colonies like Bald Eagle's Nest), and rich marine resources includingcodefish and herring. In 1907, construction began on what would become one of Everett's most iconic landmarks -The Island Lighthouse - which still stands today (though its original purpose has been changed multiple times). Over time, many other buildings were constructed on Bainbridge Island including a post office (1892), fire station (1951), police department (1957), library (1973), school system headquarters (1983), community center (1986) and health clinic/hospital(1991). Today, much of the infrastructure that once existed on Bainbridge Island has either been destroyed or removed altogether due to subsidence or decay; however, portions such as roadsides remainunderscore examples of early American engineering feats. Bainbridge Island remains an important commercial center for Everett; it ranking 5th among all U.S. counties in terms of median household income according to Census data released in 2018 . Additionally , several successful businesses have sprung up around town such as seafood restaurant Captain Jack's Seafood Shack & Oyster Bar (), real estate agent Joe's Place ()and car dealership Schmitt Mazda (). The island was first settled by Native Americans in the early 1800s. In 1824, Commodore George Vancouver sailed up the coast of Bainbridge Island and named it for Rear Admiral Sir John A. Bainbridge, commander-in-chief of British warships at Port Discovery on Vancouver Island. The original mission buildings still stand on the island today: The Commodore's House (now known as the Stanley Hotel) and The Admiralty Building (now called Queen Elizabeth II Center). The early settlers developed agriculture and fishing on Bainbridge Island, but they were unable to make much money from their businesses because there was no harbor or shipping available to them. In 1854, Alexander Graham Bell founded what would become Seattle based Bell Telephone Company on what is now Bainbridge Island. However, this company did not survive until 1956 when it merged with Western Electric Company to form NBCUniversal plc., which still exists today as one of the largest media companies in the world. During World War II, many Japanese citizens living on mainland Japan were interned on Bainbridge Island due to World WarII hysteria; however, most of these individuals eventually returned home after hostilities ended without any lasting effects for either side. In 1945, a detachment of United States Marines landed on Bainbridge Island to help liberate inmates from German concentration camps near Victoria state; however, due to enemy firebombing during their landing operation they had little success liberationally achieving their goals ashore and withdrew back into their ships before reaching shore leave at sea.]] In 1958,[46] an act Congress passed entitled "An Act To Establish Islands Along Puget Sound" created two new islands – Baker and Chelan – within limits established by Resolution 1098 (July 15th 1906).[47][48][49] These two new islands were part of land mass that had been ceded by Washington Territory in 1861 following Gold Rush discoveries along Puget Sound.[50][51] Aftermath[52]: N/A
