In 1861, Captain James Cook sailed past Bainbridge Island and noticed that it looked like an ideal place to build a whaling station because of its good water supply and sheltered harbor. With this information, Atwater began construction of his whaling station on Bainbridge Island in 1863. The first shooters on Bainbridge were men who hunted seals with shotguns or rifles. Today, much of downtownSeattle is based around this area including anchor stores Macy’s(), Sears(), Kmart(), JCPenney®, Dillard’s®, Alice Webber Jewelers®, Starbucks® and Burger King(). From 1971 until 1993, Bainbridge Island was home to Microsoft Corporation’s Redmond campus which remains one of Washington State’s major employers today with over 11,000 employees working at six campuses throughout Pierce County.* In 1978, Microsoft moved its headquarters from Bellevue, Wash., back onto Bainbridge Island following a court decision that found Redmond too costly to relocated elsewhere within Washington state.* In 2000, Boeing announced it would move production from Everett/Bellevue WA to nearby Renton WA* This signaled an end for decades of local Boeing production on Admiralty Islands* However fanatical support kept dozens if not hundreds job offers open until 2005 when GE Capital pulled out citing competition from Asia *Today there are only a few businesses left remaining off shore such as seafood restaurant Ala Moana*, kayak rental company Paddlewheeler*& whale watching company Alaskan Malamute Tours*. *Whale watching tours are now available year-round through several other companies
