Bainbridge Island is a small, isolated island in the Puget Sound region of Washington, United States. The island is located about halfway between Seattle and Tacoma, and is home to a maximum of only about 100 people. Bainbridge Island has been inhabited by humans for at least 10,000 years. After World War II, the U.S. military built Fort Snelling on Bainbridge in order to keep track of Soviet submarines operating near Seattle. Bainbridge Islanders have voted overwhelmingly in favor of joining the state of Washington as an official community since 1959. In that year, they held a referendum that resulted in a majority voting against annexation into Washington State because they felt it would be too difficult to maintain their separate culture and government while living under one jurisdiction. However, after more than 50 years of negotiations with state leaders and local officials, including two referenda on independence, members of the community voted unanimously to annex into Washington State on November 16, 1959. The inaugural meeting of what would become Bainbridge Islands Borough took place on December 1st following incorporation into King County as an unincorporated area within those boundaries It was decided that there would be only oneorough borough which would consist of all islands within King County plus Blaine Island which was annexed intoKing County less than one year later On January 3rd 1970 representatives from Everett and Bellevue Counties banded together to form Bothell Township . As such Bothell Township became part of King County as well making it possible for people from both jurisdictions to live side by side without feeling like they were living apart at best orSeparate communities inside each jurisdiction at worst

The Bainbridge Island area was first settled by the Clallam and Duwamish people in the late 18th century. The island was named for Captain John Bainbridge, who explored it in 1792. The first permanent European settlers arrived on Bainbridge in 1824, when United States Commodore George Vancouver sent a party to explore the Strait of Juan de Fuca. The group consisted of three men, including Daniel Webster, and included provisions for a possible future American occupation of the island. After reaching Gastineau Inlet, they made their way northeastward before turning back due to unexpected sandbanks. A smallpox epidemic that year killed many of the new settlers; however, their arrival inspired others to begin settlement on the island. In 1838, another U.S. squadron visited Bainbridge and reported finding oil deposits near its coast. This led to increased activity on the island as businessmen began looking for resources not only for themselves but also for potential marketplaces in Asia and Europe. By 1840, there were over 20 businesses operating on Bainbridge Island with an average daily income of $2,500; this growth continued until 1851 when a severe storm destroyed most of the local economy. During World War II several military installations were built on or around Bainbridge Island: Fort Lawley (later renamed Fort Lewis), Fort Pickering (later renamed Camp Pendleton), and Naval Air Station Whidbey Island (later renamed Naval Air Station Kaneohe Bay). These installations played important roles during various phases of World War II: from early 1942 through 1945 they produced more than 2 million barrels of oil per day which helped keep wartime production humming; later in 1945 they processed more than 700 tonsof munitions dropped by Allied forces over Japan Bainbridge Island is today a popular tourist destination with attractions such as Point Defiance Park and Discovery Cove; it is also home to several thousand residents who use it as a summer residence and commercial center
