Bainbridge Island is a census-designated place (CDP) and a town on Bainbridge Island County, Washington. The population of Bainbridge Island CDP was 953 as of the 2010 census. Bainbridge Island is perched atop a high promontory which affords stunning views of Puget Sound and the Strait of Juan de Fuca. The name "Bainbridge" comes from Captains John Bainbridge and George Vancouver who mapped this area in 1792-93 while exploring British Columbia. Bainbridge Island, Washington is a small island in the Puget Sound area of Washington located about 20 miles south of Seattle and 10 miles north of Bellevue. The island was first inhabited by the Cascadia Native Americans and later became part of the 38th parallel United States Territorial District. The name Bainbridge comes from John Bainbridge, a British settler who had arrived on the island in 1851. In 1933, Bainbridge Island became an unincorporated community within King County and is now governed by its own government. The history of Bainbridge Island begins with its initial settlement by English settlers in 1851. At that time, Bainbridge was part of the 38th parallel US Territorial District and was known as "Bainbridgewa". In 1854, John Alder founded what is now called Alder Landing on the east side of the island which became home to many early Europeans including James Watt and his brother Robert Watt. By 1860, most of present-day Bainbridge Island had been settled withFort Snelling being built on what is nowshorewest end of town. That same year saw another early settler arrive on Bainbridge named George Stephenson who came ashore to look for oil fields off shore but never actually landed on the island. He instead walked alongshore until he reached a point near present-day Pioneer Square where he placed a sign reading "House Of Stephenson" which still stands today as one of several remaining relics from that time period on the island. In 1863, Commodore David Dixon gave instructions for construction at Fort Snelling which would become one of America's largest naval establishments ever constructed just outside Seattle City limits. During this time period, many shipbuilding yards were established throughout Puget Sound including those at Ballard (now Tacoma) and Everett (now Bellevue). Many residents from downtownSeattle moved uptown during this time frame to work at these new facilities while others stayed behind to provide their own homes or farm land around fort Snelling. Some notable residents during this era include Pedro Alonso de Alvarado who played an important role in American expansionism during this time period; Clarence Darrow; Alice Paul; Harry Truman; Elmer Aldrich;and more…. During World War II, much effort was put into developing Fort Snelling into one of America's most advanced military installations able to handle large scale operations such as strategic bombing raids against Japan. Today you can see remnants OF THAT TIME Period ON THE ISLAND INCLUDING A LITTLE GAS STATION AND SOME FOUNDATION MUSEUMS!
