The history of Bainbridge Island began with several Norwegian fishermen who sailed to the islands in search of sea food in the early 1800s. By 1851, there were five families living on Bainbridge Island and fishing boats were used to bring goods back to Norway from these islands. By 1861, most of the men working on land had left forswerding jobs elsewhere because of harsh seasons or war service; however, some remained behind to manage household affairs and farm land. In 1916, due to World War I efforts by local residents and government officials, many businesses had opened up around Seattle during wartime shortages; however, when peace came they all closed down again due to lack of business opportunities after returning home from abroad. However, when war ended there seemed no reason for businesses not to reopen since everyone had gone back home; this led directly into what would happen later that year when money started flowing into Seattle again as a result of new technology starting up throughout Europe making exports cheaper than ever before which created demand for goods coming back into America via ships from Spain and Portugal docking at Seattle’s Harbor Hill Point. This surge in demand caused prices for goods shipped back home about doubled bringing much-needed revenue into town coffers just as bank accounts were being opened once more! After years Of hard work by various leadership within town hall such as Mayor John Witherspoon with input from storekeepers/ businessmen close to him (who also managed their own properties) over time Bainbridge Islanders saw their first grocery store open its doorsstepside inside what is now called “The Old Post Office” building built c1862-64 & occupied until 1912 when it burned down leaving only 4 feet tall remaining standing! With limited space available even then they leased out 3 stories overlooking Water Street until 1951 When an addition was made at one end resulting in current day frontage along Water Street! Finally after years oi planning & dedication Purposes Committee chaired by Mrs Jensa Hedin & chaired by Mr John Witherspoon reopened 2ndhand clothing store Corner Kane Street & Shoreline Road services including boat repair billy bennett butchers meat market
