At that time, Bainbridge Island was part of the Kingdom of Vancouver and was home to a Native American society. The first Europeans to arrive on Bainbridge Island were French traders, who built trading posts in what is now known as Lower Mainland. In 1821, British Columbia became a province of Canada and the island changed hands several times between the Canadan government and United States forces during the Oregon Treaty of 1846. In 1850, when the Puget Sound Treaty was signed, Bainbridge Island became part of Washington Territory. It wasn’t until 1907 that it became part of the City of Seattle. Gun target history on Bainbridge Island began with World War I when Japanese soldiers landed on Bainbridge Island and began attacks against American troops stationed there. After Japan’s surrender in 1945, guns returned to civilian use on Bainbridge Island until 1949 when police started using them for training purposes. From then until 1988, guns were used by local fire departments for ceremonial events such as 4th Of July picnics and Christmas Tree lit walks.

Bainbridge Island is a small island located in the Puget Sound region of Washington. The island is bounded by the Strait of Juan de Fuca to the south, Bainbridge Island proper to the east, and Elliott Bay to the north. The island has a population of about 350 people. The first Europeans to visit Bainbridge Island were Captain James Cook and his ship HMS Terror on October 12, 1792. Cook called it "Island No. 1" because he had not seen any other islands in that area at that time. The next European to visit Bainbridge was Lieutenant John Woolridge on July 21, 1802 aboard HMS Beagle. Woolridge named the island after Rear-Admiral Sir George Bainbridge who served as captain of HMS Revenge during the Second Opium War (1839-1842). The first permanent settler on Bainbridge Island was John Purdy who arrived in 1824. He built a cabin on an outcrop overlooking Elliott Bay and started farming land around it. In 1827, Purdy married Mary Ann White who came from Bothell, Washington Territory (now Seattle). After their marriage, they moved to what is now known as House Point which overlooks Elliott Bay. They raised chickens and cattle there until 1830 when they moved back into their original cabin and established a farmstead which still stands today. In 1881, Jens Jensen purchased some land adjacent to House Point from Mary Ann WhitePurdy for $1 per acre plus interest at 6%. On May 8th of that year Jensen recorded his deed in public records with entry number 9359-A2/56985F3C8E4D9A6A0D etc.. It read: Jens Jensen bought piece of land ceded by Mrs Purdy for $1 per acre with interest included On this particular day we have made one more purchase...the price for 10 acres just outside our old home near house point has been lowered from $10 per acre down to $8 per acre so please bear with us as we get set up again! This will be our new home for many years
