Bainbridge Island is a small island located in the Puget Sound region of Washington. The island forms the border between Bainbridge Island and Elliott Bay, and it is separated from Elliott Bay by the Strait of Juan de Fuca. The narrow strip of land running along its eastern coast is known as theIsland Head Light Range. The first permanent residents on Bainbridge Island were Russian fur traders who arrived in 1792. In 1834, John Cranch settled here with his family after fleeing Fort Vancouver during the Fraser Canyon Gold Rush. By 1870, all but four of Bainbridge's 1,000 residents had moved to Tacoma. In 1861, Commodore George Vancouver commissioned Captain Samuel Seward to survey and map what would become Bainbridge Island. Seward named the island for Rear Admiral Richard Bainbridge (1767-1842), who was then serving as commander of Navy Squadron East at Portsmouth, England. Commodore Vancouver also donated some land to create an uninhabited beach on which future businesses could be built. In 1872, a group of businessmen led by Jepson organized the Bellingham Company to purchase land on both sides of Juan de Fuca Strait from Native Americans for use as a whaling station and shipping port. This company became one of Seattle's early commercial institutions and is credited with helping spur heavy industry development in that city during its early years. In 1898, construction began on a lighthouse on Bainbridge Island after several unsuccessful attempts by private investors to build a lightship there over twenty years earlier. The first lightkeeper at this new lighthouse was Charles Eames (1847-1921). It was replaced by an automated lighthouse system in 1962 following damage caused by Hurricane Agnes

In 1907, Bainbridge Island was designated as part of the Seattle-Tacoma port area, making it one of the first areas in Washington state to be developed. Today, Bainbridge Island is a popular tourist destination with its modern infrastructure and scenic views. The history of Bainbridge Island begins with its name. The initial settlers on Bainbridge were those who lived on nearby Muir Island and named their new settlement after Captain George Vancouver's ship HMS Discovery (1792). The discovery of oil on Vancouver's Island led to increased exploration and development around Puget Sound, which in turn led to new land being explored and claimed by various individuals or groups. Among these claimants were Captain John Magnuson who established a trading post on the island in 1811; Commodore James Watt who built a harbor on the island in 1814; Lieutenant George Stephenson who created an electric railway system between Seattle and Tacoma in 1855; and Major Joseph Sellers who purchased land surrounding Bainbridge from the Clallam people in 1857. In 1907, when Seattle-Tacoma became one of the first areas in Washington state to be developed, Bainbridge was included within this city's boundaries. As such, it continued to be an important commercial center for both Seattleites and visitors to Puget Sound. In 1951, during its annexation intoSeattle proper, Bainbridge became part ofSeattle's newly formed Watershed District. This district played an important role in developing water resources for both cities as well as providing access to environmentally sensitive areas within Seattle limits. Throughout its history, Bainbridge has been home to many different businesses including breweries (most notably Boeing), lumber mills (including Whitecap Lumber Company), shipping companies (such as Pacific Northwest Navigation Company),and real estate developers (most notably Harry Blackmun).
Bainbridge Island was developed as a penal colony in the late 18th century. The island was part of the District of Columbia until 1792, when it became an independent nation. The first permanent settler on Bainbridge Island was John Bainbridge, who arrived in 1796. In 1813, the United States acquired the island from Great Britain for $5,000 cash and 10 acres (40 hectares) of land. After becoming an American territory, Bainbridge Island saw heavy European colonization with many small farms developing on the island during the 19th century. In 1915, Bainbridge Island became a U.S military airfield used by both American and British planes during World War I and II. The airport closed in 1945 and today is home to two small businesses. In 1949, Congress designated Bainbridge Island as a National Wildlife Refuge consisting of over 8 square miles (20 km2). Today, much of the wildlife that once thrived on Bainbridge has been removed or extirpated due to development nears its shores but some remnants remain such as Bald Eagle Preserve which offers hiking trails through thick stands of oak and other trees
