Bainbridge Island, Washington is a small island located in the Puget Sound region of northwest Washington. The island is administratively part of Thurston County and has a population of about 170 people. The island is named after Admiral John Bainbridge, who was captain of the USS Constitution during the War of 1812. The first permanent settler on Bainbridge Island was James Caird, who arrived in 1792 and built a small cabin on the northeast coast. In 1827, Commodore David Farragut commanded one of three warships that searched for HMS "Beagle" when its crew mutinied. After finding no evidence of treasure on HMS "Beagle," Commodore Farragut offered to give Bainbridge Island to the island's resident families in lieu of their ship's wages. In 1850, George Stephenson donated land to be used as a military reservation for Native Americans known as the Chehalis tribe. The reservation lasted until 1907 when it was discontinued due to land sales by the government to other interests. In 1909, Bainbridge Island became part of Thurston County when it was created from portions of Kitsap and King counties. At that time, there were only about 50 people living on Bainbridge Island; however, the population increased rapidly over subsequent decades due to waves of immigration and natural growth onto the island.
