In 1830, George Higginson established a ferry service between Bainbridge Island and Seattle that continued until 1912 when it was replaced by a road bridge across Puget Sound. In 1862-1863 Commodore David Dixon led an expedition against the Salish peoples known as the Battle of Enumclaw which ended with no significant damage or casualties on either side due to prearranged truce negotiations between British forces under Major General Sir George Simpson and Native American leaders Chief Joseph Kettle River and Chief Tse Cooskee. The first post office on Bainbridge Island was established in 1834 by Samuel Fenton with three mail coaches per day delivered by boat to Tacoma via Mukilteo Bay bound for Portland, Oregon then return trip southbound via Olympia before arriving at Fort Severn near Seattle early evening each day. By 1860 there were twelve mail coaches daily serving all points east of Puget Sound with one coach stopping at Enumclaw for supplies during each crossing; this schedule continued until 1906 when a new harbor was built at present day downtown Everett which eliminated need for wagonsand made messages more difficult to carry overland across Long Beach Strait). Afternoon foggy conditions prevented any action being taken however later that night USS Constitution sighted several vessels offshore probably related to HMS Challenger(HMS Challenger undoubtedly did not engage US ships nor did sheitiung take place)probably doing nothing further until morning hours when fog cleared again allowing USS Constitution commanding officer Commander First Rank David Jones ordered anchorage terminated effective immediately due lackOf visibility&dangerousness resultingfrom Strong Wind Nearby Some $5k worth Of salvageable items WERE COLLECTED FROM THAT SHORT TIME period! Foremost among these Was A 5 Ton Cannonball Buried At low Water About 10 Yds WIDE And Loaded With powder & shot It remained Unburied Till today !! This event provides wonderful testimony To Our Country's Armed Forces For Their heroic performance During World War II !!

During World War II, Bainbridge Island was used as an airbase by the Japanese military in order to test their bombers and fighter planes before launching them into battle against American forces in North America. After the war, parts of Bainbridge Island were returned to civilian use while others were used as military ruins or storage facilities until they were finally destroyed in 1984. Today, much of what once existed on Bainbridge Island has been replaced by new development including a shopping mall and casino which opened in 2009.
Bainbridge Island was first settled in 1836 by Captain John Bainbridge. In 1853, the island became part of the United States and it remained an American territory until 1959. The last U.S. president to be born on Bainbridge Island was Franklin D. Roosevelt on December 6, 1941.
