That year saw also the first public use of a radiosonde system weather observation on BainbridgeIsland- this radar station monitored conditions overlyingSkagway Bay and reported back information to Seattle about weather conditions over nearby islands including Gig Harbor and North Bend

Bainbridge Island is a small island in the Puget Sound system, located southwest of Seattle and southeast of Vancouver, British Columbia. The island is named after Rear Admiral George Bainbridge, Commander in Chief United States Fleet at the time of its purchase by the US Navy from the Canadian government in 1856. Bainbridge Island was first settled by Native Americans during the late 1st century AD. The first European to visit Bainbridge Island was Juan de Fuca on December 11, 1592. In 1792, John Jacob Astor purchased land on Bainbridge Island from the Nisqually tribe for $5 million. The island became an important commercial center during the 19th century because it offered easy access to Puget Sound and Oregon wine country. From 1855 through 1893, Rear Admiral George Bainbridge served as Commanding Officer of Naval Forces Northwest (CNO NW). During his tenure as CNO NW, he developed various methods for using naval forces to promote trade with Japan and other nations around North America. In 1894, Rear Admiral George Bainbridge assumed command of Naval Forces Northwest and erected a lighthouse on shoreline overlooking Puget Sound. He also began construction of a new navy dockyard on nearby San Juan Island which eventually became world-renowned for its quality architecture and engineering feats such as Concourse Building at Washington State University (WSU) between 1915 and 1936; USS Olympia (AO-1) launched from her berth at WSU in 1922; and HMCS Alaska (AC-7) moored offshore at WSU until she was decommissioned in 1957. During World War II both Naval Forces Northwest and Pacific Force were activated to support U.S Office of Strategic Services activities among other duties throughout Southeast Asia before being disbanded in 1945. By 1925, Bonny Point Lighthouse had been built ashore adjacent to present day Powell Bay but no further development occurred until 1933 when Commander William Atherton authorized erection of a concrete tower atop Point Lookout Hill visible from much of downtown Seattle including Bothell Park where today's Hilton Head Hotel stands
