Bainbridge Island is an island located in the Puget Sound region of Washington. The island is administratively part of Thurston County and has a population of about 1,200. The island was first settled by people from Russia in the 18th century. Bainbridge Island became a U.S. territory on December 14, 1959, following the passage of the United States Constitution through Congress. The earliest evidence that humans were living on Bainbridge Island comes from ancient stone tools found on nearby Long Beach Peninsula dating back to around 12,000 years ago. Clothing and other artifacts dating back to 7000 BC have also been discovered on the island. By 4000 BC, there were already permanent human settlements present on Bainbridge Island when the first non-Native Americans arrived in what is now Thurston County. The first known European arrival to Bainbridge Island was Russian sailor Mikhail Lazarevich Chirikovsky who landed there with his ship "Ilya Ignatievich" in 1792 during the First Kootenai War between Russia and Great Britain. Chirikovsky brought over two hundred Russian fur traders who settled at various points around what is now Bainbridge Island before returning home in 1798 aboard his ship "Frantisek". In 1824, British merchant Samuel Woodson visited Bainbridge Island for trade purposes; he erected a small pier at Point Defiance which served as his trading port for many years until it was destroyed by fire in 1827.
