After this event, the oil industry declined on Bainbridge Island until World War II when there began an upsurge in maritime activity which led to increased fishing opportunities along the island chain . After World War II ended, many businesses closed down or moved away from Bainbridge Island; however, some persisted such as Stevenson Bros Oil Company which continued operations until 1976 Finally after more than 50 years of decline - due largely to climate change - Stevensons Oil Co., Inc., became operational again in 2016 as an Offshore Energy Solutions company based at Ptarmigan Cove on nearby Islay .
