He owned an estate on the east side of Tacoma, which he used as a basecamp for exploring what would become Puget Sound. In 1792, Day donated land to the town of Auburn on the south bank of Elliott Bay in Kitsap County after becoming its first Mayor. The early years of Auburn were difficult due to lack of water resources and other obstacles like this continue until today; however, through hard work and determination, the community has turned around over time. Today, there are multiple business districts within the city limits including downtown (the heart of town), North Eastside (a heavily residential area near Interstate 5), South Eastside (home to many small businesses), and West Seattle (with significant aerospace industry presence). In 1907, when Seattle's population topped 10 million people for the first time ever, local entrepreneur Keyes Kiffin realized that if Seattle wanted to be truly global leaders in terms of commerce then it needed an airport - something that hadn't been possible before thanks to only two commercial airports serving the entire metropolitan area: Tacoma-Tacoma International Airport and Boeing Field outside Olympia! So Kiffin purchased 4 acres adjacent to CenturyLink Field north of Safeco Stadium for $2 million dollars ($24 million adjusted money value today) - paving the way for Pierce Air Force Base which opened its doors just 2 years later on November 12th, 2010! With so much progress made over such a short period of time within our community we can rightfully say that Auburn has always been proud & poised to make big things happen!
Auburn, Washington was first settled in 1807 by the Puget Sound Fur traders. The town was named for General James M. Auburn, who led an expedition to explore the Port Angeles area in 1806. In 1828, the town received a charter from King George III of England as a town in order to facilitate trade between Seattle and British Columbia. The first mayor of Auburn was John Wengler. In 1892, the city of Auburn annexed the neighboring community of Parkland and became one municipality with a population of over 100 residents. In 1916, Auburn incorporated as a city under Governor Herbert Crouch and had its own police department until 1968 when it joined Seattle's Metropolitan Police Department. In 1978, City Council passed Resolution No. 9 which called for the merger of all three municipalities into one city with a population greater than 50,000 people within 10 years. This proposal was never ratified by the voters but has been mentioned periodically since then as an option for future consolidation among these three cities
