Auburn, Washington is a city in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 382 at the 2010 census. Auburn is located on the south bank of the Columbia River and is part of the Seattle–Tacoma metropolitan area. It was founded in 1851 by brothers George and David Auburn as a town on the east side of Puget Sound. In 1872, it became an incorporated city with its own government. In 1959, it merged with neighboring Edmonds to form Auburn–Edmonds. The name "Auburn" comes from two places: one was a small Indian village near Auburn Junction on the Snake River where General Andrew Jackson fought; and another was a farmstead in central Washington near Microsoft's current campus. The original community site for Auburn was along what is now Interstate 5 about northeast of downtown Seattle. The first house there was built by brothers George and David Auburn in 1851 when they started their new town on land leased from the Indians (the site now includes parts of downtown Seattle). They named their town after General Andrew Jackson who had fought against them at Battle of Waynesboro while they were under British occupation during the War of 1812. In 1872, when cities began to be established in King County, David Atherton persuaded his brother George to merge his towns Edmonds and Auburn into one city so that they would have their own government separate from those of other localities within King County which were all still governed by village or township forms ofgovernment until then. This merger created such excitement that tickets were issued for residents to attend hearings on whether or not they wanted to become citizens of this new city! The first mayoralty election held in this newly formed city occurred on November 3rd,1872 with Wm E Henson being elected mayor followed by John Crain as vice-mayor over incumbent Jno Freeman who had been re-elected Mayor 4 years earlier! On December 5th 1870 Joseph Burchman was elected clerk/treasurer/first class mail carrier! On January 1st 1889 Charles Ladd took office as police officer! On January 15th 1893 Sidney Smedley became first white teacher hired full time in our school district!!! As we know today much has changed since these early days including our current location within King County – but we have never stopped trying to keep up with some great things that have happened here like our amazingly diverse skyline view across Elliott Bay – thanks largely to our amazing job market which continues to grow even stronger every day!!
