In 1888 local resident Jno Hutton opened a post office in what became known as Auburn after his farmstead became one of several properties donated by Hutton for use as a mail station during an effort to promote commerce between Tacoma and Yakima valley via wagon roadways across Cascade mountain ranges (the Soo Route). In 1902, Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen moved from Redmond, Washington to Tacoma and established his home in downtown Tacoma where he met future president George H.W Bush who resided at 1721 First Ave NW then later moved to 4th Avenue NE which served as his official White House quarters for two years following President Franklin D Roosevelt's death in 1944 before he moved into Blair House on Capitol Hill renamed it "H681".
