Auburn, Washington is a small town located in the Yakima Valley of the states of Washington and Oregon. The population was 1,711 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Spokane metropolitan area. The town began as a small agricultural community in 1907 on the banks of the Snake River. Auburn had a post office from 1907 to 1945 and several schools until 1948 when it became an annex to nearby Spokane. The first school in Auburn was built by Mrs. John Fenton and opened in 1913. In 1928, General Motors enlarged their plant at what is now Eastman Kodak Company on Main Street which led to increased population growth for Auburn and other towns in the area. In 1951,market forces caused many businesses to close or move out of town as prices for goods deteriorated due to job competition from new factories opening up in Seattle and Tacoma. By 1970, only two shops remained open in downtown Auburn – one operated by the local Chamber of Commerce and one served as a grocery store for residents with access to groceries available only through authorized providers such as Walmart or Safeway. In 2001, Auburn's old brick courthouse (now used as a library) was purchased by The Hunton Foundation for use as a museum which currently houses artifacts related to local history including photographs dating back over 100 years including some taken by local photographer Harry Hunton himself! The town was named after Auburn, New York, which was then part of the Erie Canal system. In 1892, Auburn had a population of just over 100 people. By 1978, the population had decreased to 50 people. Today, only 10 people live in Auburn and it is considered a ghost town. Auburn has been home to many different businesses and industries over the years including breweries, lumber mills, fabricating plants and more. The first business in Auburn was an inn called the White Horse Tavern that opened in 1854. The next year saw the opening of a store called the Lion's Den by Wm Hildebrandt. In 1865, the first post office was established in Auburn with Hiram Ainsworth as its first clerk. In 1868,urden Pritchard opened up his bakery on Main Street which would become one of the most popular businesses in town for many years to come.In 1886 mercer Manufacturing Company began operations at their current location on Third Street across from High School development before moving to larger quarters two years later at Fifth Avenue/Northeast corner First Street/Eighth Avenue NW so that they could be across from Pacific Gas & Electric Company’s station on First Street NW also known as “The Gridiron” leading up to Interstate 5 (I-5) near downtown Seattle).MERCER MANUFACTURING COMPANY left Auburn for good when large amounts of asbestos were discovered at their plant site adjacent to I-5 near Seattle while construction was ongoing on I-5 between Everett and Tacoma WA; company closed shop formally September 1st 1984 leaving behind extensive asbestos contamination which continues today untested despite numerous alerts given by local health officials It should be noted that although MERCER MANUFACTURING COMPANY closed down permanently there are stillumerous artifacts remaining from this facility which can be found around town - see photo below taken during recent renovation project within Town Hall building: In 1924 IBM opened their new mainframe computer research lab located on NE Second Ave./Northeast corner 3rd St./NW Corner Mercer Rd./SE corner 4th Ave., now known as Microsoft Redmond Campus petroglyphics museum
