In 1861 Tacoma became an incorporated town after being granted city status by Territorial Governor Isaac Stevens; in 1907 Auburn became part of Tacoma. In 1912 then-Governor Edwin Meek vetoed legislation making Tacoma an agricultural center due to concerns about water availability for farming in Centralia; instead he authorized construction of Interstate 5 which crossed through central Tacoma then divided it into two portions: north which became Redmond while south remained part of Tacoma becoming Issaquah In 1965 Snohomish County was formed from most of Pierce County including parts now within Auburn; Snohomish County had a total population of 91,812 as Of 2009 . That number increased rapidly through annexation over subsequent decades until 2000 when only 8%, or 6square miles (18 km²), out ofcity boundaries remained unincorporated
