Auburn, Washington is a small town in the Yakima Valley of central Washington. It was founded in 1892 by George Armstrong Croom and named after Auburn, England. The population was 1,811 at the 2000 census. The townsite extended west to the Snake River and east to the Mount Rainier National Park boundary. Auburn first attracted settlers because of its fertile soils and easy access to water resources. In 1892, George Armstrong Croom built his first home on what is now Main Street in Auburn. By 1900, he had developed a large agricultural tract that included much of present-day Auburn and parts of Walla Walla County. In 1902, another pioneer, J.F. Haughey, arrived from Canada with his wife and five children to establish a post office in what is now downtown Auburn. Haughey quickly became known for his excellent crops and for building an early irrigation system that allowed later farmers to grow potatoes on high mountain slopes near modern-day Yelm Anticoagulated Water Treatment Plant No 2 (now part of Umpqua Community College). Haughey's widow remarried in 1904 and continued her husband's prosperous farming operation until her death in 1951; their son John Fenton Haughey took over management of the land around Yelm Anticoagulated Water Treatment Plant No 2 until his death in 1979. AUBURN FIRST CLOSED DOWN FOR BUSINESS IN APRIL OF 1945 AFTER THE WAR WITH JAPANESE BOMBING AND DESTRUCTION OF MUCH OF THE TOWN'S POPULATION
