Arlington is one of the oldest and most significant cities in Washington State, founded by the Masons on December 14, 1851. The area now known as Arlington was part of Spokane County until 1889 when it became part of what is now Pierce County. The first permanent settler in present-day Arlington was Lewis and Clark Expedition member James Koury who opened up the land to farming in 1839. Over time, various homesteaders arrived including George Stephenson and his brother Robert who built their home near modern-day Crystal City on Spring Creek which still stands today. In 1857, John Denton purchased 640 acres from Stephenson for $10 per acre. Denton named his new community Arlington after General George Washington's home at Mount Vernon – an honor given to him by President James Koury on July 4th of that year. The town grew rapidly with its initial population numbering about 100 people within two years! Denton served as Mayor from 1860 to 1865 and again from 1870-1872; during this time he also helped found the Tacoma Female Seminary which still operates today as Tacoma University’s School of Education (now known as Puget Sound Insight). There were also several small businesses located throughout downtown such as Woolworth’s grocery store and threeivery stable operated by Driggs & Company tavernkeepers just north of Beale Street between First Avenue South and Second Avenue South (later renamed Regent Street). In 1886, Arlington incorporated as acity under state law No. 9266 having a total population of 714 residents including 559 white male citizens and 248 black female citizens according to census data taken that year….. In 1912 Georgetown incorporation took place concurrent with Arlington creating yet another municipalityFurther growth followed ensuing annexation by Kingman City Eminent Domain Acquisition Act No 8294 filed on November 15 1917….. After World War I ended Congress passed legislation implementing GAPA giving cities like Kingman City carte blanche to annex adjacent rural parcels if they could demonstrate “a reasonable need for municipal services”…. This enabling power eventually led to KINGMAN CITY'S Annexation Proclamation No 3160 being issued dated October 25 1951…… And so it went: successive annexations taking place until 1959 when KINGMAN CITY WENT PUBLICLY AGAINST ARLINGTON UNDER THE NAME OF GARY COUNTY…….. On January 1 1960 Arlinton became an independent city once again…………….. Today there are over 22K people living in Arlington proper along with annexed areas making it one of Washinton's most diverse suburbs...and one that has managed to remain competitive even amid all its recent changes
