In Arlington, Washington, there is a history of firearms and target shooting dating back to the 1800s. The area now known as Arlington was once part of the Shawnee Nation and many of their guns were used in gunfights between American Indian tribes and Spain during the mid-19th century. In 1853, Congress passed an act regulating the trade in firearms, which led to the establishment of a territorial police force for Arlington. The first Gun Club met in 1874 and continues to this day as one of the oldest continuously operating firearm clubs in Washington State. In 1875, rifle matches were held at Fort Myer on Arlington Heights where today's National Memorial Museum is located. In 1902, pistol competitions were inaugurated at Fort Worth Park on Arlington Heights which still takes place annually today. When World War II started, Arlington became home to over 20 artillery batteries ranging from medium machineguns all the way up to antiaircraft guns. Many cannons and rifles were brought here from European battlefields including two 6-pounders that fired over 100 rounds per minute! During World War II, nearly 3 million rounds were fired by these artillery pieces across four wars! Arlington is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 5,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle–Tacoma metropolitan area and is the county seat of King County. Arlington was founded in 1851 as an agricultural town named for General James Garfield. In 1903, Arlington became one of the first cities in Washington to be incorporated as a municipality. The city's fortunes began to turnaround after World War II when it became one of the most prosperous small towns inWashington. Since then, however, Arlington has seen its share of social unrest and economic decline. In 2015, Mayor Muriel Bowser announced that she would not seek re-election because she felt her city was on track to lose $1 million per year by 2020 due to various budgets cuts made by her predecessor Philip Sperling. The origin story of Arlington dates back to 1851 when General James Garfield established his military post at a bend in the Lewis River near what is now central Arlington Heights (then known as Aberdeen). WhileGarland did not name the community after himself – he chose instead “Arlington” for its location within easy reach of his previous headquarters at Fort Myer on Tacoma Island – subsequent settlers soon realized that this choice had an important implication: if they wanted their new community to become successful it must have strong commercial ties with Puget Sound and Seattle – two major centers of commerce then both growing rapidly thanks to burgeoning railroads and overland mail routes connecting themboth). Accordingly, early residents organized into local trade organizations and bought land from developers who had proposed building factories or other industrial ventures in what would become known as Central District (later renamed Park Avenue) . The event that led to Arlington's secession was known as The Battleof Ballston Springs where Confederate forces under General Robert Ewing attacked Union troops at Balls Field outside Arlington Heights with heavy losses (the Union force lost 5 officers and 50 men while the Confederate forces lost only 11 men). Aftermath including President Abraham Lincoln's speech delivered at Ballston Springs have been used as inspiration for many patriotic songs throughout American history.
In 1792, the first permanent English settlers arrived in Arlington, Washington. The area was part of King George's County until 1846 when it became part of Washington Territory. In 1861, Arlington was made a town and in 1900 it became a city. The population reached over 100,000 by 1950 and has since grown to over 200,000 people.
